Research Assistant Divorced 2 Army, 1969-1970 Reading,Googling,gardening,word puzzles,blood donor. 2012-11-28 22:47:12

Thank you Tom and all and Martha along with her capable colleagues.

Fifty years is quite a span of time – long enough for me to do my share of dumb things.  Okay, a few more than that, but enough went right for me to be happy with where I’m at. Took a BS in forestry, but never worked in that profession.  Took an MS and PhD in entomology but never worked in that profession.  My whole career has been with the IR-4 Project in support of our agriculture industry.

(for explanation, see http://ir4.rutgers.edu/) I have been a supervisor in a lab at Michigan State University that does only pesticide residue analysis followed by reports that are destined for the EPA.  That helped my two girls to get their BS degrees and in one case, an MS in psychology. The other daughter is now an RN who has applied to graduate school to become a Nurse Practitioner.  Invented a better mouse trap (Pat. # 4,719,718) but that was one of the dumb things (yet fun).

Found a place in a rural subdivision that may not be the best acre on the planet, but which has brought me pleasure in many ways and it will not flood.   About 7 years back, I began the hobby of making wine, and planted some grape vines, pear trees and blackberry bushes.  All make nice wines but grapes are the hardest to tend.

Created a web site for bringing together as many men as we could find from the same infantry unit in Vietnam (https://www.msu.edu/user/kon/)  which led to another site (by a real programmer) that holds pictures submitted by our unit’s veterans (www.lzbravo.org).  In fact, I started a web site for OHS alums years back, but the host changed before it was completed from being free to charging by month, so that project faded away. Our current site is better anyway.

Currently own a good cat named Sarge because you can’t let dogs run free any more.  Compared to the OHS class that held their 50th reunion in 1962, we may have seen 150 years of change and isn’t that something?  Retired on 07 May 12 along with 10,000 of those baby boomer kids.   The reunion is over now and I merely want to say how much I enjoyed seeing everyone again whether we spoke or not. The two year wait was worth it.

After college (SUCO BA) and graduate school at Rockefeller College of Public Affairs (Masters in Government) I made my best move in 1967 and married my college girlfriend, Nan Decker, and began my career in government.  The first few years I was in health planning at the State Health Department and then moved on to the State Budget Division in  1970 where I  was at various points director of management analysis and consulting, health and human services finance, and federal relations.  In 1997 I was named Deputy Commissioner of the NYS Department of Social Services and retired from that position in 2002.

Career Highlights:  Completed Senior Managers in Government Program at JFK School, Harvard University, 1980;
appointed by Governor Hugh Carey to manage the transition from his administration to incoming Governor Mario Cuomo, 1982; selected as member of the State Academy of Public Administration, Rockefeller College of Public Affairs, 1983; represented NYS and served on the leadership council for the National Association of State Budget Officers, 1993-196; represented NYS interests in Washington, DC, during congressional welfare and Medicaid reform debates, 1995-1996; received Government Leadership Recognition Award from the Chancellor of New York State University, 1998.

Nan and I have two daughters, Alyson  and Erica, who reside with their families near Princeton, NJ, and in Philadelphia, PA.  We have four grandchildren with whom we are way passed delighted.  Nan taught in the Niskayuna (NY) School District and retired in 2005.  Inspired by the 1984 Olympics, she and our daughter Alyson founded the Niskayuna High School rowing program with 30 rowers.  The program has grown  to more than 150 rowers and a fleet of modern boats and has spawned more than a dozen other high school programs in the Capital District.  Nan continues to row and has competed in regattas in the capital district, Massachusetts, Georgia, and California in recent years.

So now I am in my tenth year of retirement (from a paying job) and think I really have the hang of it.  I have enjoyed serving on the reunion committee and am very much looking forward to catching up with as many classmates as I can.  Hope to see you this summer.

Retired Educator Divorced 1 Reading, hiking, skiing and travel the world over Time flies as we live our lives. I find it truly amazing where life has taken the Oswego High School Class of 1962.! Oswego was an awesome place to grow up. We in Oswego had the bonus of having a university at our doorstep. After 2 years at SUNY-Oswego, I ended up graduating from Arizona State Univ. with a teaching degree. My 1st job was teaching in El Centro, California at the JFK Middle School. Transfered to Palos Verdes, Ca. so I could obtain a California teaching credential. After obtaining a masters in reading education I was hired by the Department of Defense which fulfilled my dreams and opened my eyes to a wide world of cultures. I was assigned to Subic Bay, Philippines for 3 glorious years of exotic living in other cultures. Next, I moved on to Yokosuka Japan for a couple of years where my classroom looked over the entrance to Tokyo Bay, even climbed to the top of MT Fuji on my 33 birthday. Pursuing my quest to see the world I was transferred to Argentia, Newfoundland, Canada with its stark etheral beauty. My last great career move was to Wurzburg,Germany, a gorgeous city on the Main River, where I spent 27 years,living and learning so much about the cultures of Europe. While this sated me immensely, it was having a daughter, Lauren, that completed meaning in my life .She is now 24 and finshing up a masters in education at ASU, where after retiring in 2006 I returned to live. Soon Lauren graduates and hopefully find work. Myself I pine daily for my city of Wurzburg and the wonderful lifestyle, all while enjoying retirement here in 'hot' Arizona 2015-07-31 21:09:15

After graduating from OHS, I went to Cornell, meeting Carol (Wells College) the following year.  We were married after she graduated (1967), and we spent the next several years in the Marine Corps.  In 1971 I left the military, and we spent the next we ten years at Duke University, in medical school and then surgical training.  We lived in Greenville, NC for the next twenty years, practicing surgery and teaching at the medical school.  Finally, in 2000, we retired to the mountains of North Carolina, where we jointly operate a business designing and bulding (and hopefully selling!) furniture and wood carvings.   Send Richard Martin a MessageSend Richard Martin a Message
